Description

The John Day River Restoration Program for Non-Permitted Projects implemented restoration at 13 worksites from 2009 to 2015 that addressed fish passage and water quality issues in the Upper John Day Basin. The projects were all part of Grant SWCDs Upper John Day Restoration Program. Fish passage improvements were implemented at 10 irrigation diversion sites. Ten diversion structures, designed to provide fish passage, were installed, providing improved passage to 48.6 stream miles. Upland Irrigation improvements to replace failing antiquated wooden drains with perforated pipe were installed at 3 worksites located adjacent to the John Day River.

Project Benefit

The project will benefit Mid-Columbia ESU spring chinook salmon and DPS summer steelhead by providing unrestricted year-round fish passage for all life stage of salmonids, accelerated re-establishment of reparian vegetation, improved water quality, and increased cold water refugia for salmonids.
