Description

Project Objective: To estimate the number of adult salmonids returning to seven creeks on the Hoopa Valley Reservation.

Project Description: Seven creeks (Tish Tang, Campbell, Supply, Mill, Soctish, Hostler, and Pine creeks) on the Hoopa Valley Reservation have been monitored for salmonid spawning activity since the Hoopa Valley Reservations Fisheries Departments inception. Data from these annual redd surveys are incorporated in basin wide estimations of run sizes. Additionally, the extended time series data offers valuable information on the past and current trends on returning adult salmon in the lower Trinity Basin. This project would monitor the seven creeks in fall and winter for chinook and Coho spawning activity, and visit those same creeks again in the spring to monitor for Steelhead spawning activity.

Project Benefit

Project Benefits: SONCC in the lower Trinity River are identified in the Recovery Plan as being at high risk of extinction. Restoration of tributary habitat for both natal and non-natal SONCC is therefore of great importance. This project facilitates the evaluation of spawning success of anadromous salmonids within Reservation streams, providing managers with necessary data to prioritize potential restoration sites and evaluate restoration success.
