Description

Wahkiakum Conservation District worked with two non-industrial private landowners to implement a salmon recovery project on Wilson Creek in the Skamokawa Creek watershed. The project addressed restoration priorities identified in the Lower Columbia Salmon Recovery Plan for juvenile and adult Winter Steelhead, Chum, Coho, and Fall Chinook. The project installed 40 wood-based structures with emphasis on spawning and rearing habitat and treated about 12 acres of riparian buffer. The number of structures was reduced due to access issues to the left bank due to riparian conditions. Two side channels were treated to increase habitat quantity and quality.

2017 PCSRF funds were spend within the award period.

Project Benefit

This project will address limiting factors for spawning, rearing, and off-channel habitat for various life states of Winter Steelhead, Chum, and Coho. This project will add large wood to create pool and riffle complexes for rearing habitat. The slower water will sort gravel and reduce sediment for spawing habitat.
