Description

Lewis Conservation District will work with Port Blakely Timber Company to plant willows along approximately 1800 feet of stream and 12 acres of land. This project will reconnect the floodplain, remove invasive species and help attract beavers to remake ponds for salmon fry rearing and summer water retention. This is part of the Lewis Conservation District effort to restore the Mill Creek Basin. Port Blakely will be an excellent partner with their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Project Benefit

The goal is to minimize canary grass, reconnect the floodplain, establish 12 acres of willow, and provide cool water during the low flow summer period. Beavers are present downstream of the project site. These natural engineers will harvest the willows and create dams. This will help to flood out the canary grass and help to create habitat that benefits all aquatic life. Coho and other fish will benefit from the increased rearing habitat. This is unique opportunity to improve habitat in partnership with a timber company.
