Description

Description of Project
Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Fish Program will conduct a life cycle monitoring study of salmon and steelhead in two Intensely Monitored Complexes: the Lower Columbia Complex (Mill, Abernathy, Germany creeks) and the Hood Canal complex (Little Anderson, Big Beef, Seabeck, and Stavis creeks) during calendar year 2023.
Study Goals for IMW stream complexes:
(1) Estimate abundance of salmon and steelhead at the adult spawner, summer parr (coho only), and spring smolt life stage, as applicable to each stream complex.
(2) Estimate survival between life history stages including the freshwater life stages (egg, summer parr, spring smolt) and marine stages (harvest, escapement) applicable to each species and stream complex.
(3) Conduct analysis of trends prior to restoration ??? identify natural variation and environmental variables correlated with this variation.
(4) Work collaboratively with regional and local restoration groups on the selection and design of restoration treatments within the IMW watersheds.
(5) Conduct analysis of fish population responses to restoration actions ??? including use of a Before After/Control Impact statistical design and environmental covariates identified in pre-restoration analyses.
