Description

Mason Conservation District utilized this grant to complete final designs for a nearshore project that will enhance up to 480 feet of marine shoreline along Case Inlet in Allyn, WA. Specific actions identified in the design include removing approximately 120’ of shoreline armor, installing multiple habitat trees, and planting native vegetation. This beach was identified by the Squaxin Island Tribe’s Nearshore Project Selection Tool as a high priority for Chinook restoration. The project site is highly visible to the public and will be ideal for public outreach. In addition to project design, the Mason Conservation District conducted shoreline landowner outreach and education to promote sustainable and responsible shoreline stewardship along Case Inlet shoreline. A total of 30 site visits were made to individual property owners, and follow-up guidance was offered. As a result of these outreach efforts three additional shoreline enhancement projects are now in the design phase, and multiple other landowners are implementing best management practices (planting, drainage improvement, etc). This project is intended to benefit Chinook, Chum, Coho, and Pink salmon, steelhead, and searun Cutthroat Trout.

Project Benefit

Develop designs to restore natural shoreline processes and improve habitat along 480 ft. of shoreline, and conduct a robust outreach effort in Case Inlet to inform shoreline landowners about the nearshore environment and develop additional projects.

This project supporrts the South Sound Recovery goal of ensuring that there are properly functioning nearshore habitats that serve their rearing, refuge, feeding, physiological transition, and migratory needs of Chinook, Coho and other salmon species. One of the key strategies identifiied in the plan is the removal of shoreline armor and bulkheads that are not essential. Additionally, all actions presented by this proposal, including education/outreach, are identified in the Chinook and Bull Trout Recovery Approach for the South Puget Sound Nearshore.
