Description
This project installed 3 engineered log jams (ELJ) on four private properties in lower McLane Creek (RM 0.5). The four neighboring project sites are located within the upper limits of tidal exchange and is heavily used by spawning and rearing salmon (coho, chum, steelhead, and coastal cutthroat). This project designed and installed three channel spanning ELJs to maximizes an opportunity to create large complex pools, sort gravel, and to allow for stream flows through the jams. The McLane Creek watershed is a tier one salmon stream in the WRIA 13 salmon strategy and a lack of in-stream wood is listed as a limiting factor. Adding stable wood to McLane Creek is also listed as a high priority in the Lead Entitys Three-Year Work Plan. The ELJs were installed at three localized bends in the creek and will absorb and dissipate the streams energy. Installing three medium-sized ELJs will create excellent long-term habitat features for rearing fish in this reach. 3 acres of floodplain bench was treated with 2,900 6x2 willow stakes and planting 80 upland native plants. The willow stakes will treat the reed canary grass infestation.
Project Benefit
The project designed and installed three structures (9 Pieces of wood each) on the lower .5 mile of McLane Creek. Treated 3 acres of reed canary grass with with 2,900 willow stakes on the wetland marsh, planted 80 potted upland and wetland margin native plants.
