Description
As part of Final Designs, the project achieved its goal and worked with adjacent landowners to achieve project objectives. As part of Final Designs the project: - developed designs that maximized wetland creation, fish passage and thermal benefits to fish - developed designs that took into considerations adjacent lands with reduced impacts including working with the local HOA - supports rearing juvenile salmonids over 4,000 ft. on Mason Creek and connection to wetlands and 2,000 ft. on the mainstem East Fork Lewis River; in both areas we improved instream habitat - utilized collected WSE data to drive hydraulic modeling and site inundation mapping for existing and restored conditions - developed 2d hydraulic model to assess existing and restored conditions - developed JARPA permit - initiated initial floodplain modeling for (later) FEMA consultation - completed cultural assessment - continued to meet with HOA
Project Benefit
The project goals are to: Protect Tier 1 salmonid habitat along the main stem East Fork Lewis River and Mason Creek, a tributary to the East Fork Lewis River.
The purpose of the project is to provide off-channel rearing for upriver fish and Mason Creek fish. The Mason Creek project will connect critical wetland habitat to provide off-channel rearing, while mainstem Eat Fork Lewis River will also focus on rearing and spawning opportunities. Both sites will address degraded riparian and in-stream habitat conditions. The project developed habitat restoration designs that will contribute to the recovery of chum, fall Chinook, coho and winter steelhead.

Name of plan implemented
April, 2009. Lower East Fork Lewis River Habitat Restoration Plan (for the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board). Project ID # MS 01 (Mason Creek) was developed to the conceptual design stage in the plan. Project ID #EF-41 (East Fork Lewis River) was also developed to the conceptual design phase in the plan.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
Both EF-41 and MS 01 are ranked among the top 6 projects in the Lower East Fork Lewis Habitat Restoration Plan. MS 01 is the # 6 ranked project in the Habitat Restoration Plan. For both projects there is a detailed write-up and conceptual design in the plan.
Detailed write-ups and conceptual designs are included in Appendix F, Attachment 1 of the plan. The restoration plan looked at the lower 15 miles of the watershed and prioritized restoration projects based on life stage limiting factors, regional recovery goals including reach specific fish use and physical habitat conditions. |
