Description

The Dosewallips Estuary Barge Removal project involved acquisition of one shoreline parcel in order to restore the shoreline and estuarine area of this property. This project area is located at the mouth of Walker Creek which is south of the mouth of Dosewallips River. Restoration activities included removal of a 40 foot wide, 190 foot long creosote barge and a portion of the associated fill that is located on the acquired property in the southern part of the Dosewallips River Estuary. Invasive plants were removed and the disturbed areas were replanted with native vegetation. The mouth of Walker Creek is part of the greater Dosewallips Estuary complex which is important juvenile rearing habitat for Hood Canal Summer Chum, fall chum, chinook pink and coho salmon. The location is an ideal location for education outreach to tourists and local folks about this restoration project, project partners/sponsors and the need for salmon habitat restoration.

Project Benefit

This property included acquisition of a 1.5 acre parcel and removal of a 40 foot wide, 190 foot long derelict barge, and a portion of the associated fill material to restore natural functioning estuarine processes.
