Description

Snohomish County built on the successfully completed North Meander Slough Reconnection and Phase II projects (PRISM #01-1307 and #05-1605), located on the island of Silvana, between Cook Slough and the Stillaguamish River. This project was a design and construct project. We were unable to construct. However, we did complete design plans and obtained permits for future construction.

We collected information of the existing conditions in the North Meander including: channel profile, existing wood material locations and condition, access, and potential wood material placement locations. We used this information and observations to identify three locations for proposed engineered log jams (ELJ). We developed a typical design for boulder ballasted ELJs using 29 logs and 16 boulders, with additional woody debris for racking material.

We obtained all necessary permit including: HPA, Flood Hazard, Corps Nationwide, and approval from USFW.

Project Benefit

Restoration project goal is to establish high-quality, off-channel rearing and refuge habitat for juvenile Chinook and other salmon.
