Description

This project successfully protected 12.29 acres of land featuring floodplain salmon habitat on Barney Lake in Mt. Vernon, WA. The acquisition followed the 2017 Skagit Watershed Council (SWC) Protection Strategy as part of the Skagit Chinook Recovery Plan. This project also completed initial site security and stewardship planning for the acquired parcel. Finally, this project completed landowner outreach through the Skagit Watershed to identify new parcels for protection.

Project Benefit

The primary goal is the protection of Tier 1 floodplains of the mainstem Skagit. If the Debays Slough property is not purchased, then the protection areas would expand to Tier 1 floodplains of the mainstem Sauk and Cascade and Tier 2 tributaries for the primary benefit of juvenile Chinook habitat and habitat-forming natural processes.
