Description
This is phase 1 of a 5 phase project. Phase 1 will focus on Germany 7, 8, and 9. Reach 8 is tier 1. In this reach the project will focus on reconnecting floodplains with side channels, instream habitat complexity, and riparian restoration. Reach 7 & 9 are within tier 4. These reaches are predominantly bedrock and the proposed action is import LWD to be anchored to bedrock to retain bedload. It is desirable to have this phase in place prior to working in the upstream reaches in order to retain bedload mobilized from the subsequent phases.
Project Benefit
The project goal is to implement a salmon recovery project that addresses the primary limiting factors for Germany EDT reaches 7, 8, and 9 of importance to life stages Coho, Winter Steelhead, and Fall Chinook. The desired future condition consists of cobble, gravel, fine sediment bedload accumulating on bedrock dominated reaches. LWD structures will further generate habitat quantity and diversity that will likely create pools habitat and sort gravels at tail outs for spawning, pools for cover and cool water refugia, and keep access to side/off channel for high water escapement and spawning. Accumulation of bedload on bedrock will aid in alleviating temperature concerns in the watershed.
