Description

The restoration project replaced an existing 7-foot wide by 5-foot tall corrugated steel pipe with a 22-foot wide by 9-foot tall by 50-foot long concrete box culvert. The project is located at milepost 15.79 of Centralia Alpha Rd approximately 3 miles northeast of Onalaska in Lewis County, WA. Additional construction included the placement and removal of a temporary bypass road; the regrade of approximately 130 feet of channel; excavation of pools; placement of streambed within the regraded channel; and installation of large woody debris. The project restored unimpeded assess to 3.51 linear miles of potential habitat for the Southwest Washington Evolutionarily Significant Unit of of coho salmon and 2.63 linear miles of potential habitat for the Southwest Washington Distinct Population Segment of winter steelhead trout.

Project Benefit

The goal of the MF Newaukum C. Alpha Fish Passage Construction Project was to restore fish passage to all life stages of coho salmon and steelhead trout. In addition to providing passage the project enhanced habitat through the installation of large woody debris, streambed, plantings, and a low flow notch within the regraded stream channel.
