Description

The Walla Walla County Conservation District implemented a 0.56 mile long restoration project located on the Walla Walla River, in Walla Walla County in the summer of 2023. Construction started at the Last Chance Road bridge and continued upstream for 0.56 miles. The overall project goals were to install instream and streambank structures, floodplain reconnection, side channel reconnection and enhancement, and riparian plantings. There were a total of 28 structures placed both instream and on the rivers bank. Riparian plantings occurred following constructions. There were 29 acres of undercanopy plantings in the project area. This project will improve all aspects of habitat for Mid Columbia steelhead and bull trout.

The project was imlpemented as designed. The discrpency in the number of wood structures installed is due to a reporting error at the time the project was put under agreement.

Project Benefit

The installation of 28 instream structures were placed with the intent to improve instream fish habitat and restore natural stream processes through the 1/2 mile long reach. This project is intended to promote retention of mobile wood, increase floodplain connectivity, and improve all aspects of habitat for Mid Columbia steelhead and bull trout.
