Description
The Upper Columbia Salmon and Steelhead Recovery Plan identifies research that targets specific issues that constrain effective recovery plan implementation as an area of critical research. This monitoring project has successfully revealed a larger array of diversity in the life-history strategies exhibited by juvenile spring Chinook within the Upper Columbia Basin. Major outcomes of this project include revealing previously unknown life-history strategies involving extended periods of rearing within the Columbia River, which appear to play an important role in population level productivity. Additionally, this project has shown that juvenile rearing locations may be determined from otolith microchemistry analysis through incorporating water chemistry analysis. The findings from this project are now being actively incorporated into management strategies and additional studies intended to elucidate the needs of juveniles rearing within the Columbia River for extended periods.
