Description
The Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board (LCFRB) partnered with the WA Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to develop a coordinated and systematic process to calculate and store hatchery and escapement reporting metrics that are essential for reporting on hatchery threat reductions and population-scale viability. Metrics were developed for all hatchery-influenced populations in the Lower Columbia River region. Metrics were calculated based on already existing data gathered during population monitoring in WRIAs 24 through 29 as well as data gathered at the 12 WDFW salmon hatcheries in Region 5 (SW Washington). Metrics included: hatchery juvenile releases, proportion hatchery origin spawners (pHOS), proportion natural origin spawners (pNOS), proportion hatchery origin broodstock (pHOB), proportion natural origin broodstock (pNOB), and proportionate natural influence (PNI). These metrics are identified in the Lower Columbia Conservation and Sustainable Fisheries Plan (2016) as key to regular hatchery and harvest impact reporting in the region. This project funded data extraction routines and database modifications so metrics could be systematically, accurately and efficiently calculated and stored consistently in agency databases. WDFW delivered the metrics to the LCFRB on an annual basis in order to support recovery plan monitoring and adaptive management.
Project Benefit
The population data will be used to inform adaptive management of the Lower Columbia recovery plan. This includes prioritization of future recovery actions to reduce impacts and improve viability of Lower Columbia salmon and steelhead.
