This project was the continuation of a long-term monitoring program to assess status and trends of the Central California Coast Coho Salmon, California Coastal Chinook Salmon, and Northern California steelhead populations in coastal Mendocino County watersheds, following methods from the California Monitoring Plan- CMP (Adams et al 2011). The Coastal Mendocino County Salmonid Life Cycle and Regional Monitoring Project is also funded by a separate PCSRF contract with Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) and provided with support and cost shares from partners.
Project Benefit
Recovery of these distinct units of salmonids depends on whether important populations have reached abundance thresholds, and if biological recovery criteria are met (NMFS 2012, NMFS 2016, Spence et al. 2008). This project provides measures of recovery by producing annual escapement estimates, as well as measures of freshwater and marine influence on observed trends in abundance. Salmonid habitat restoration planning, and the implementation of recovery plans and population supplementation relies upon salmonid abundance, distribution, and diversity information obtained through the Mendocino Coastal Monitoring Program.
