This project provided funding to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to conduct three CMP projects in the Eel River Watershed:
1. The South Fork (SF) Eel River Adult Salmonid Abundance Monitoring Project;
2. The California Coastal Chinook Salmon Monitoring Project in the Main Stem Lower Eel River; and
3. Spatial Structure Survey in the Lower Eel-Van Duzen River
Projects 1 and 2 share the goal of monitoring adult salmonid populations in the Eel River; however, they differ in location and how the monitoring will be conducted. Project 3 provided data on the distribution of juvenile salmonids in the Lower Eel-Van Duzen River.
Project Benefit
The SF Eel River CMP project will monitor adult Coho Salmon abundance in the South Fork Eel River and is needed to evaluate both trends in population abundance as well as the population response to recovery projects implemented to treat limiting factors. Spatial structure surveys are necessary to provide information on the expansion or contraction of Coho Salmon distribution in Lower Eel and Van Duzen River recovery unit. Spatial structure is an essential component of population viability and provides invaluable data to advise restoration activities and assess population recovery. The Main Stem Lower Eel River CMP project will monitor adult and jack Chinook Salmon abundance in the mainstem Eel River and is also needed to address both trends in population abundance as well as the population response to ocean management strategies.
