Description

The project implemented a series of water conservation measures to improve streamflow in upper Green Valley Creek, a critical coho/trout spawning/rearing tributary of the lower Russian. The project was prioritized through NFWF-funded Russian River Water Resources Coho Partnership and described in the Upper Green Valley Creek Streamflow Improvement Plan to improve streamflow in upper Green Valley Creek. The water conservation measures included shrinking the irrigated area, replacement of the existing irrigation system with a more efficient system, aerating and composting the soil to improve rooting depth and water holding capacity, installation of drought-tolerant turf, and development of a new rainwater catchment system to provide a portion of the remaining irrigation water demand. The project’s water conservation measures will reduce dry season water extraction. Furthermore, the camp signed a 25yr forbearance agreement to not extract water from their alluvial wells during Aug-Oct.

Project Benefit

Summer/fall streamflow in the creek falls to critically low levels in most years, imperiling juvenile fish during the year they spend rearing in the stream before migrating to the Pacific Ocean. The project is projected to result in an increase in streamflow of roughly 0.05 cubic feet per second throughout the August-October dry season.
