Description

54 features were completed in the Willits Creek project reach. Implementation of this project occurred 08/05/24-09/25/25. Minor deviations from the design plans occurred during implementation due to changing stream conditions and available materials/anchor points. 172 logs, including 29 logs with root-wads, were installed within the 54 features. Logs were sourced from the local riparian or delivered via logging truck. Log structures were built using an excavator. Equipment was operated 08/05/24-08/16/24 and 09/08/25-09/12/25. The CCC moved logs into position, anchored structures, and assisted with mulching disturbed areas with rice straw. The CCC worked 08/19/24-10/10/24 (lower reach) and 09/15/25-10/01/25 (upper reach). 150 native trees and shrubs were planted on 12/10/25. Performance measure metrics were collected.

Project Benefit

This project will greatly improve salmonid habitat in Willits Creek. The large wood structures are designed to promote flood plain engagement, provide velocity refugia, sort gravel, scour pools and provide pool cover. Enhanced habitat in Willits Creek will improve salmonid growth and survival.
