Description
Grantee (ERWIG), and subcontractors Edwards Excavation and California Conservation Corps (CCC) installed twenty-eight (28) large wood features along 0.7 miles of Somerville Creek. The structures were comprised of 133 pieces of large wood, including twenty (20) pieces with rootwads attached. The CCC assisted ERWIG staff with the riparian planting of eighty (80) tree saplings throughout the project reach. During construction some instream feature designs were modified with approval from the CDFW Grant Manager. Post-project implementation metrics were gathered by ERWIG and entered into WebGrants. Pre and Post effectiveness monitoring was conducted by the Monitoring and Evaluation of Salmonid Habitat Restoration (MESHR) team.
Project Benefit
The Project will improve instream habitat by enhancing spawning and rearing habitat by increasing pool area and depth, increasing shelter complexity, capturing and sorting spawning gravels, increasing floodplain and side channel inundation, recruiting large and small wood, and providing velocity refugia during high winter flows.
