Description

Reed canarygrass, Bohemian knotweed, European bird cherry, and European mountain ash are invasive plant species that are well-established in or near streams, wetlands, and riparian areas that sustain salmon and steelhead populations in the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ). These invasive species can outcompete and displace native plant species that provide important ecological functions benefitting fishes and other aquatic organisms. This project will continue efforts to eradicate these invasive plant species where they directly and indirectly threaten salmon and steelhead habitat.

Project Benefit

This project provides on-the-ground restoration of salmon and steelhead habitat by controlling invasive plants infestations that presently, or could potentially, alter physical stream habitat used by salmon and steelhead as well as the food webs that sustain freshwater production of certain life stages and species of fish. Eradicating these invasive plants will allow native plant communities to provide self-sustaining natural ecosystem functions and processes.
