Description

The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe has completed a restoration design for the Little Hoko River, the largest tributary of the Hoko River. The Tribe has successfully obtained funding from the SRFB to implement this restoration action in 2023-2024. The Little Hoko River is the largest tributary of the Hoko River. This project will be conducted between river mile 0.0-2.5 on lands owned by Washington State Parks. This is a wood restoration project and significant amounts of wood will be added to 25 locations within the 2.5 mile reach. Wood will be added as complex logjams designed to reduce flood velocities, improve floodplain connectivity, and spawning and rearing conditions for Pacific salmon including Chinook, coho, chum, and steelhead.
The Tribe proposes to utilize its FY 22 award as project match for the restoration effort. Specifically, the Tribe will utilize funding to help pay for scheduled heavy lift helicopter time implementing the restoration project.

Project Benefit

The intent of this project is to support the addition of LWD to the Hoko River system, which support the development of increased habitat complexity, which will increase the habitat productivity to support salmon and steelhead.
