Description

Funds from this grant were used for the final design, permitting, and geotechnical investigation of the tide gate location. Additionally, funds were used to complete some pre-construction activities, including importing Zone B material for constructing the offset levee which will protect Highway 126 from wind and waves after full restoration is complete and regular inundation occurs. While the design phase of this project has been completed, implementation is ongoing.

Project Benefit

The overall goal of this restoration project is to enhance and improve habitat and watershed processes for Oregon Coast Chinook, coho, Steelhead, and cutthroat trout, and other important aquatic species that were once abundant in the rivers of the Tribes Ancestral Territory. The full restoration of Waite Ranch will restore over 200 acres of former tidal wetland and Siuslaw River riparian area and support a complex food web, improved water quality, and resilience to the impacts of climate change.

The Waite Ranch is located upstream from Cushman Landing, approximately 8.5 miles from where the Siuslaw River enters the Pacific Ocean. The Waite family homesteaded the Western Lane County area somewhere around the turn of the century.
