Description

The purpose of the Project is to produce site characterizations, a risk assessment, and design and preparation of engineering plans for large wood habitat enhancement structures within a three-mile reach of the Big River. The project is necessary because multiple state and federal salmonid recovery plans promote restoration projects designed to create or restore complex habitat features that provide for localized pool scour, velocity refuge and cover in high priority watersheds like Big River.

The specific objective of this Project is to identify opportunities for, and design engineered log jams (ELJs) that, once implemented, will provide physical shelter, promote diversity in flow velocity structure where fish can harbor during higher velocity events, create scouring forces to develop a complex channel bed with deep pools, and locally raise the water surface elevation to increase floodplain connectivity.

Project Benefit

The project goal is to restore salmonid habitat complexity in a three-mile reach of the Big River by installing moderate to large-scale ELJ structures. These structures will be used to create habitat diversity and flow complexity for Coho, steelhead, and Chinook Salmon to improve both summer and winter rearing conditions. It is expected that the habitat improvements will also benefit lamprey, and other native aquatic species.
