Description

In anticipation of winter storms, a DIDSON camera site was prepared at RM 0.4 along Topanga Creek to determine adult steelhead migration timing and abundance. The DIDSON was not deployed in the winter of 2020/2021. A Passive Integrated Tag (PIT) array was operated 200 feet downstream of the DIDSON site (RM 0.4) from December 29, 2020 to May 6, 2021 to estimate steelhead marine survival and productivity. The PIT Tag antenna is able to operate without surface flow and remained on for the deployment period. Marker tags recording on 15-minute intervals indicate no significant gaps in PIT antenna effectiveness during this period. In addition, redd surveys were conducted in the Topanga Creek watershed from RM 0.0 to the end of anadromy (RM 4) from January 11, 2021 through May 4 2021 to determine adult steelhead spawn timing, spatial structure, and to compare detection rates with the DIDSON surveys.

Project Benefit

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) issued a recovery plan for Southern California steelhead in 2012. The Recovery Plan requires a set population level be reached in each of the five Biogeographic Population Groups (BPG) within the Southern Steelhead Distinct Population Segment in order to de-list the species. The only way to determine what the current steelhead population status is and whether recovery efforts are working is though the establishment of a large-scale monitoring program.
