Description

Using 363 pieces of LWD (320 key logs),72 features were constructed along a 1.9-mile reach of Julias Creek, West Fork Julias Creek and East fork Julias Creek (Map 3a and 3b). Sixty-one of the features were constructed using heavy equipment, eleven features were ?constructed? by directly felling timber into the channel. Hard anchoring of log material was not needed, as all keylog material used was at least 1.5 times bankfull width with a rootwad and logs without rootwads were at least 2 times bankfull width. Logs that did not meet key log criteria were wedged into existing live trees or within the key logs at the features. Accelerated recruitment features 61, 62 and 68 were not constructed due to the presence of significant numbers of juvenile steelhead in shallow disconnected habitat. With the support of the grant manager additional feature numbers 23.5, 25.5, 28.5 and 64.1 were identified and the features were constructed in alternate locations.

Project Benefit

Expected benefits of this Project is to develop more frequent and deeper pools, produce complex cover, create high velocity refuge, achieve wood loading densities above ?very good and ultimately improved habitat for all life stages of salmonids.
