The purpose of the Project is to plan and design a channel and floodplain restoration project that will rehabilitate Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and California Central Valley steelhead (O. mykiss) spawning and rearing habitat and restore channel, floodplain and riparian ecosystem processes within a critical section of the Lower Tuolumne River. The Project will yield baseline data and analysis necessary for 100% design plans, ultimately leading to enhancement and restoration of up to 32.3 acres of channel, floodplain, riparian, wetland and upland habitats.

The design includes excavating perched floodplain and remnant side channels, to provide up to an additional 19.8 acres of seasonally inundated off-channel rearing habitat, as well as create up to 5-8 spawning riffles in approximately one river mile on the mainstem.

Project Benefit

The Project will result in increased rearing habitat complexity, additional food resources for juvenile salmonids and other native fish, refuge habitat from predators, and main channel spawning; which together supports increased native fish species production in the Tuolumne River. This project not only targets improved physical habitat, but also water quality benefits, in particular, improved channel temperatures. Restored side channel habitat will result in rearing space for an additional 24,500 to 898,000 juvenile salmonids ranging in size from 30 mm to 120 mm. Constructed spawning riffles will improve spawning conditions for adult salmonids.
