Description
This project completed 100% designs for the removal of four barriers to Southern steelhead migration in the Wheeler Gorge Campground on North Fork Matilija and Bear Creeks, and replace two of these barriers with vehicular bridges. The removal of these barriers will result in an additional 13 miles of good quality habitat to be made available to SCS in the Ventura River watershed.
Project Benefit
The proposed project will develop 100% design plans for the removal of four barriers to Southern California steelhead migration within the Ventura River watershed. This project would ultimately provide additional habitat to SCS habitat, which has been identified as one of the key limiting factors to SCS population growth.

The Ventura River Watershed is listed as a Core 1 Recovery watershed by NOAA, thus improving access to additional high-quality SCS habitat is necessary to support SCS populations. Habitat has been identified as a limiting factor to SCS populations, thus this project will directly address this limiting factor by opening up additional habitat via barrier removal. |
