Description
Smith River Alliance, Michael Love & Associates and Del Norte Resource Conservation District
completed a series of studies that were used to inform the development of 100% engineered
designs to restore instream and riparian habitat along Upper Tryon Creek. The design effort
focused on restoring natural processes to increase the habitat quantity and quality for winter
rearing salmonids. Coho salmon was the focus species for the restoration design, but instream
and floodplain restoration are expected to benefit other anadromous species that utilize lower
floodplain tributaries in the Smith River Plain including Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus
tshawytscha), Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus), steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus
mykiss), and Coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkia clarkia).
Project Benefit
Project will allow for restoration of a 0.83 mile long channelized stream reach in the Smith River Plain by developing channel plan form designs with natural meander bends, instream habitat including scour pools, and ultimately restore fluvial processes to increase and maintain juvenile coho salmon winter rearing habitat.

SONCC_SmiR.2.2.2.1: The Upper Tryon Creek Stream Enhancement Design Project will allow for restoration of a 0.83 mile long reach by developing channel plan form designs with natural meander bends, instream habitat including scour pools, and ultimately restore fluvial processes to increase and maintain juvenile coho salmon winter rearing habitat. Upon implementation the proposed project will also increase conifer riparian vegetation, and fence livestock out of riparian zones in Tryon Creek. |
