Description    


Cowlitz Conservation District assisted 3 of the 4 landowners proposed in this project. The fourth landowner opted not to participate. The project culminated with treatment of about 4000 feet of the 5000 feet of stream origionally proposed. Four debris jam deflectors and 10 smaller wood clusters were installed and about 1700 feet of sreambank was planted with woody vegetation. The objectives included: streambank stability to slow accelerated streambank erosion that was threatening planted riparian buffer vegetation; provide holding habitat and rearing habitat with the riffle dominated reach; and plant additional riparian vegetation along streambanks that have been actively eroding to provide long-term root strength riparian function. This project benefits all life stages of winter steelhead, coho, fall Chinook, and chum within the action reach (4) and downstream reaches.


Project Benefit    


The goal of the project was to address resource concerns limiting salmon recovery within this reach. Objectives include streambank stability to facilitate establishment of riparian vegetation, increasing habitat diversity, increasing habitat quantity, and improved water quality.
