Description
The Cowlitz Indian Tribe, in partnership with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, created new and enhanced existing side channel habitat at two sites near the lower Cispus River southeast of Randle, Lewis County. The project included excavation of a new 1,100 side channel to intercept groundwater near the confluence of the North Fork Cispus and Cispus Rivers, and a new 850 channel and deepening, enhancement, and extension of an existing side channel near the confluence of Yellowjacket Creek and the Cispus River. Both locations provide excellent rearing habitat for juvenile coho, winter steelhead, and spring Chinook. Adult salmon and steelhead transported around the Cowlitz River hydropower system are planted near the project sites, ensuring use by their offspring.
Project Benefit
Create and enhance side channel habitat at two sites near the lower Cispus River southeast of Randle, Lewis County. Off-channel habitat created through the project will provide rearing habitat for salmonid juveniles and habitat for a range of aquatic species.
