Description

The goal of the project is to improve habitat for ESA-listed salmonids in the White Salmon River including Mid-Columbia Steelhead, Lower Columbia Coho, and Lower Columbia Chinook by enhancing improving riparian conditions. The project area is the former reservoir of Condit Dam. Most of the former reservoir was originally planted in 2012. The grant will add trees to a 0.3 acre riverbank in the former reservoir that was not planted after the removal of Condit Dam. The grant will also support identification and planting of any other significant gaps within the former reservoir, and removal of noxious weeds, weed mats and tree tubes that were left from earlier planting. The tree tubes are damaging growth. The landowner is continuing to treat weeds in the former reservoir. Community volunteers will supplement this work by hand removal of targeted noxious weeds to ensure the native riparian vegetation establishes.

Project Benefit

The goal of the project is to enhance riparian condition along the White Salmon River. The desired condition is that the river be buffered by healthy, mature, native riparian vegetation including large native conifers.
The outcome of the work will benefit all life stages of the following listed salmonids: Mid-Columbia Steelhead, Lower Columbia Chinook salmon and Lower Columbia river coho salmon.
Salmonids are present in this reach year-round.
