Description

The Grays River LWD Habitat Complexing project restored in-stream habitat complexity necessary for improving adult holding cover and for improving juvenile rearing success in the highest priority reaches in the Grays River basin. This objective was accomplished by placing LWD at two locations covering .35 miles of stream channel. One location is in the West Fork Grays just upstream from the confluence with the mainstem and the other location is approximately .50 miles downstream in the mainstem Grays. Both sites are located on property owned by Schmand Family Trust.
The project resulted in construction of 3 wood structures in the West Fork Grays and 10 wood structures in the mainstem Grays. In addition, LCFEG removed 3,000 cubic yards of material to create a by-pass channel and stabilized 550 of eroding stream bank. The results include creation of 10 new pools heavily used by juvenile and adult fish alike. Pool depth exceeded 10 at one structure location necessitating a project amendment to insure the structure and the habitat created was not lost in future flood events.

Project Benefit

The goal of the project is to improve instream morphology and habitat in salmon bearing streams. The objective of the project is to increase instream cover, spawning, and resting areas.
