Description
South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group removed a portion of a vertical pile bulkhead and associated fill from a low elevation shoreline in Filucy Bay, in Carr Inlet, near Longbranch, WA. The toe of the bulkhead sat at 12ft MLLW. The project removed shoreline armor and fill, regarded slope to increase marsh habitat, and restored local processes of salt marsh production, and therein food web production and improved the character of the beach to enhance forage fish spawning and provide shallow water habitat for juvenile salmonids. The finished project improved the rearing capacity of Filucy Bay to support juvenile Chinook, chum, pink, and coho salmon by providing an incremental benefit at this particular site and planted conifers on shoreline above tide level. The marsh will seed itself from adjacent sources.
Known archaeological site required additional cultural resouces protection which increased project costs.
Project Benefit
The objective of the project was to remove shoreline armor and rehabilitate local processes of salt marsh, and therein food web, production and to improve the character of the beach to enhance forage fish spawning and provide shallow water habitat for juvenile salmonids.
