Description
The Cowlitz Indian Tribe proposes to improve the quality and quantity of spawning and rearing habitat for winter and summer steelhead in Gobar Creek, a tributary to the Kalama River. The 15 acre project site will focus on the reconnection of the floodplain and the removal of a 2.6 acre former hatchery acclimation pond, known as Gobar Pond. Crews will incorporate hundreds of floodplain trees and re-grade the incised, single thread channel back to its historic anastomosing channel condition or Stage 0. The Gobar Pond restoration project, will spread flows across the full width of the target area, increasing the diversity of functional habitat, benefiting populations of Kalama River summer and winter steelhead.
Project Benefit
Reconnect the floodplain and remove a former hatchery acclimation pond. Replant floodplain trees and re-grade the incised, single thread channel back to its historic anastomosing channel condition. Spreading flows increases the diversity of functional habitat, benefiting populations of Kalama River summer and winter steelhead.
