Description    


The Lower Columbia River Fisheries Enhancement Group used this funding to address degraded floodplain conditions and functions in the upper Washougal River that had been identified by the lead entity and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) as limiting salmon and steelhead production.

This project treated specific reaches of the mainstem Washougal River between river miles 15 and 22 that had become deeply incised in a bedrock channel due to log drives and catastrophic forest fires in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The project directly benefited a primary population of ESA-listed summer steelhead, as well as contributed to populations of ESA-listed Chinook and winter steelhead. Other species present in the treatment reaches included coho salmon, resident cutthroat and rainbow trout, and mountain whitefish.

The Upper Washougal project increased in-stream cover, increased spawning and rearing areas, increased pool depth, decreased channel width, and increased sub-surface flows. It is believed that the project also resulted in increased macro-invertebrate populations. The riparian elements and deep pools created resulted in water temperatures and retention of organic material necessary for increasing watershed productivity. The objectives were accomplished by constructing 15 engineered log jams, 30 log weirs, 3 boulder weirs, and 10 boulder clusters. Project partners included Washington Department of Natural Resources, Longview Fiber, WDFW and Skamania County.

The goal of the project is to improve instream morphology and habitat in salmon bearing streams. The objective of the project is to increase instream cover, spawning, and resting areas.
