Description

The Columbia Estuary-Knappton Conservation conserved 378 acres of wildlife habitat on the Lower Columbia River Estuary. The project supports all 13 threatened Lower Columbia salmon ESUs as all use this portion of the Columbia River Estuary prior to entering the ocean. It is located on Knappton Cove, between the Astoria bridge and Naselle in Pacific County, southwest Washington.

The property consists of emergent and scrub-shrub intertidal wetlands, Columbia River tidelands, riparian areas and associated upland forest. It has ¾ mile of Columbia River frontage and eight streams running into the Columbia. Also, the property is adjacent to 130 acres with one mile Columbia River shoreline conserved by Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, adding to habitat connectivity. The combined conservation area totals 508-acres with 1¾ miles of Columbia River shoreline.

The ¾ mile of Columbia shoreline, 2,500 feet of fish-bearing stream, emergent marsh, riparian areas, and cove-sheltered tidelands provide healthy fish refugia and prey and allow fish to transition from fresh to salt water. The forested uplands and streams provide cool fresh water, nutrients, prey, and large wood.

Project Benefit
