Description    


Wahkiakum Conservation District proposes to implement a salmon recovery project on the Johnston property along Wilson Creek in the Skamokawa Creek watershed. the project addresses all priority restoration needs, priority life stages, and limiting factors for Winter Steelhead, Chum, and Coho. This project will remove invasives located within the riparian planting area, to include Polygonum cuspidatum and Rubus armeniacus. The project will install 51 wood-based instream structures along 4,118 feet of Wilson Creek and along 1108 feet of side channel and off channel habitats, created as part of instream work. Project will restore riparian function on 17.6 acres along 3,000 feet of Wilson Creek. Wood structures will focus on increasing habitat diversity and quantity. Emphasis will be placed on both rearing habitat and spawning habitat. Two side channel habitats will be modified to improve connectivity, maintain long-term channel maintenance during the winter flow regime, and increase habitat complexity. Practices thus far are considered short-term salmon recovery practices. The project proposes to establish a functioning forest riparian buffer along Wilson Creek and the side channel habitats.

Project Benefit    


This project will address limiting factors for spawning, rearing, and off-channel habitat for various life states of Winter Steelhead, Chum, and Coho. This project will add large wood to create pool and riffle complexes for rearing habitat. The slower water will sort gravel and reduce sediment for spawing habitat.
