Description    


Wild Fish Conservancy used this funding to acquire and restore habitat to aid recovery of ESA-listed anadromous fish. The project restored historical access to, enhanced, and protected 23.6 acres of Schoolhouse Creek (SHC), a spring-fed wetland complex tributary to the Washougal River that delivers cold (13.8 degrees Celsius in July 2000) water year-round. The Washougal, a major tributary to the Columbia located in Clark County, supports mixed stocks of coho, fall Chinook, summer and winter steelhead, as well as resident rainbow and cutthroat trout. The restored wetland complex provides critical off-channel spawning, rearing, and over-wintering habitat, as well as refuge from high summer water temperatures in the Washougal (20.6 degrees Celsius on the same day), for coho, cutthroat, steelhead, and possibly Chinook and chum salmon.

The project enhanced the quality and quantity of the existing spring-fed wetland by adding large woody debris and riparian vegetation and by creating additional rearing and spawning habitat connected to the existing wetland complex. Log controls and a roughened channel at the culvert inlet were used to maintain fish passage and proper water elevations that maximize rearing habitat and minimize stranding. Acquisition (via project partner Columbia Land Trust) of the site ensures protection and maintenance of the critical habitat in perpetuity.

The goal of the project is to protect and connect isolated habitat to increase the range and distribution of salmon. The objective of the project is to protect and increase access to freshwater in-stream side channels, oxbows, and other channels.
