Description    


Mid-Columbia Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group replenished large woody debris in key reaches of high-priority tributaries in the Upper Yakima subbasin -- tributaries noted in either the Yakima Subbasin Plan, the Yakima Subbasin Salmon Recovery Plan, the Yakima Subbasin Steelhead Recovery Plan, or the U.S. Forest Service watershed analyses that are specific to individual drainages. Tributaries included:Taneum, Williams, Swauk, Blue, Hovey, Iron, Mill, Mosquito, South Fork Manastash, and Jungle creeks. Project locations were mostly on public lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service or WA Department of Fish and Wildlife. Implementation of this project is expected to result in direct habitat benefits including: increased pool habitat; retention/deposition of spawning gravels; cooler water temperatures; improved floodplain connectivity and increased hyporheic exchange. In addition to fish benefits, the wood used in this project was harvested from adjacent, over-stocked coniferous stands. By thinning the over-stocked stands, the project provided the added benefits of decreasing fire potential/fuel loading and reducing the susceptibility of riparian timber stands to insect damage. This project selectively removed fir trees from uplands and, via grip-hoist, and bumper-mounted winches, moved the felled trees into the streams. Washington Conservation Corps, Mid-Columbia Fisheries, Yakama Nation employees and volunteers accomplished the work. The work is intended to benefit steelhead, Chinook and coho salmon and bull trout critical habitat.

Project Benefit    


The goal of the project was to improve instream morphology and habitat in salmon bearing streams. The objectives of the project were to increase instream cover, spawning, and resting areas.
