Description
The overall project will restore approximately 1.5 acres of stream mouth, intertidal, and fringe marsh habitat as well as 0.5 acres of riparian habitat. The Strawberry Plant property is one of the most significant opportunities to restore lost habitat in Eagle Harbor and will benefit salmon, other fish, shellfish, birds, and other wildlife. The property is a public park currently owned by the City of Bainbridge Island and the ownership will eventual be transferred to the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park and Recreation District and upland park planning and development will be completed. Eagle Harbor has suffered significant habitat impacts, including the historic filling of two fairly large subestuary marsh/lagoon habitats in the outer harbor that can never be restored due to Superfund reclamation. The project site is located near a recently restored salmon stream (almost 1 mile of habitat opened to chum, cutthroat, coho), 7 small stream subestuaries, 7 recently completed or in-progress nearshore restoration projects, and an aquatic conservancy area (see nearby habitat map). The project included restoration of intertidal habitat, marsh, and marine vegetation and included removing creosote piles, concrete bulkhead and rip rap, debris and fill material, and reducing impervious surfaces in the shoreline area; establishing a natural shoreline and stream mouth; and creating a salt marsh along the shoreline and stream mouth. Public recreational components related to the restoration project included establishing pedestrian public viewing and direct water access points and a non-motorized boating access area.
Project Benefit
The goal of the project is to restore estuarine and nearshore conditions and processes in the marine environment. The objective of the project is to restore shoreline habitat diversity and function.
The goal of the project is to restore native vegetation in the marine environment. The objective of the project is to restore marine riparian, intertidal, and subtidal vegetation.
