Description
This project proposes to acquire, preserve and restore portions of sensitive side channel habitat adjacent to the Twisp River. Side channel and rearing habitat are identified as limiting factors for Spring and Summer Chinook, Bull Trout, and Steelhead in the Methow Watershed. The property historically provided off-channel rearing and over-wintering for salmon species.
This acquisition will permanently preserve and protect approximately 9 1/2 acres of land that provide spawning and rearing habitat for listed and threatened salmon. Acquisition creates opportunity for restoration, enhancement, and educational activities.
This project will restore and increase off-channel spawning and rearing habitat for salmon. The project is supported by the Town, landowners and compliments other recovery projects in the Methow Basin. The restoration includes re-connecting the historic river channel through ponds that were developed after the installation of the Corp of Engineers dike in the early 1970s. Stream channels will connect the ponds on the associated properties and to the river on the downstream side and piping of an irrigation canal and new fish screen with fish bypass will be installed on the upstream side to provide more reliable supply of water to the channels.
Project Benefit
The goal of the project is to protect and connect isolated habitat to increase the range and distribution of salmon. The objective of the project is to protect and increase access to freshwater in-stream side channels, oxbows, and other channels.
