Description

Recent declines in the abundance of many Chinook salmon stocks have caused severe hardship in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) region. In a rapidly changing climate, it is important to understand how conditions in freshwater and marine environments influence the productivity of these highly valued stocks, and whether sub-stocks are responding similarly or differently to environmental change. This project will build on previous climate-salmon studies by: (1) developing time series of key environmental drivers including precipitation and stream temperature specific to individual watersheds, and (2) quantifying the effects of these and broader-scale drivers across a diverse array of salmon stocks.

Project Benefit

This study will benefit salmon conservation and subsistence fisheries management by providing information about the climate-dependence of salmon sub-stocks for prioritizing land conservation, habitat restoration, and scientific research projects to address and mitigate the most important climate impacts, considering climate effects in management frameworks, and potentially identify predictive relationships that could improve preseason forecasts of Chinook salmon abundance.
