Description

The Mission Creek Habitat Complexity will install small wood structures (BDAs and PALs), ELJs, and rocks/boulders instream, revegetate riparian areas, and install cattle exclusion fencing and livestock watering systems along a 2.02 mile segment of Mission Creek, Idaho. An existing culvert will receive streambank stabilization treatment at its downstream end with logs, rock, revetments, and vegetation to curb erosion. Currently there is very little habitat complexity in the stream due to human practices. Wood structures will provide instream habitat complexity through pool creation and rearing cover, slow stream velocity, trap debris, and improve meadow function by raising water tables.

Note that BDAs and PALs are captured under other engineered structures in the metrics.

Project Benefit

The project goals include 1) improve meadow function by elevating stream channels and raising water tables nearer to natural levels, 2) improve in-stream habitat complexity and provide areas for increased pool creation, and 3) reduce elevated water temperatures for steelhead. As channel complexity improves, the number of juvenile steelhead utilizing this 2.02 mile stream segment are expected to increase.
