Description

A steelhead passage barrier draft design was completed for a site on George Creek, a tributary to Cottonwood Creek and part of the Clearwater Subbasin in Nez Perce County, Idaho. The existing culvert is a complete passage barrier to all steelhead life stages as fish access is currently blocked by an 11 diameter culvert with a 4 outlet drop. Project implementation will restore passage and provide access to 1.67 miles of steelhead habitat using BIL IIJA funds in 2025.

The George Creek Culvert Design project produced an engineering design package for an 80% design level. During the design process, alternatives were provided and cost estimates completed. Environmental review included NOAA biology review of the selected design alternative.

This project received two amendments to extend.

Project Benefit

This project will allow access to 1.67 miles of perennial stream in the Cottonwood Creek drainage. As access is improved, pre-smolt and smolt stages of steelhead utilization of the stream is expected to increase.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
This site was identified during the stream inventory and barrier assesment components of the watershed plan development. The plan identifies 13 barriers to be removed or retrofitted to increase habitat access. The barrier removal will meet the criteria of the steelhead limiting factor identified as Habitat Quantity 1.1 Anthropogenic Barriers (page 39 of plan). The plan identifies the barrier in treatment Group E (pages 47).
