Description

The eradication of invasive northern pike was accomplished in the affected areas of the Miller Creek drainage in October 2021, and success was confirmed in the spring of 2022, along with confirmation that native species have repopulated the treated area. A fish barrier is currently in place and maintained in Miller Creek to prevent future reintroduction of invasive northern pike to the treated system.

The method of eradication precluded a count of pike removed by the project as the carcasses were not recovered from the system; the 42 in the metrics represent those that were sampled prior to chemical treatment and is thus a minimum (and undoubtedly low) count.

Project Benefit

This project is a final and critical step toward ADF&G’s long-term goal of eradicating invasive northern pike from the entire Kenai Peninsula. Once this project is complete, the Kenai Peninsula will no longer have source populations from which northern pike could either escape or be illegally or unintentionally introduced elsewhere, and the Miller Creek drainage will once again support local sockeye and coho populations free from pike predation.
