Description

Tribal staff were involved in many interconnected agencies and groups committed to habitat and salmon stock preservation and recovery efforts. The main groups included the Lake Ozette Sockeye Steering Committee, Lake Ozette Technical Review Team, the North Olympic Peninsula Lead Entity (NOPLE) (formerly WRIA 19), the North Pacific Coast Lead Entity (NPCLE), and the Washington Coastal Salmon Sustainability Partnership (WCSSP). The funds also supported staff to interact with state, federal, and local governmental agencies to develop policy and efforts that supported salmon recovery. These funds were also used to support planning and assessment activities in a variety of other areas that were vitally linked with salmon recovery efforts, such as the development of proposals supporting salmon recovery and habitat restoration for submission to various funding sources.

Project Benefit

Funding of salmon recovery planning allows and supports the Tribe’s participation and coordination in groups and meetings that affect regional salmon restoration planning, habitat preservation, stock management, and funding efforts. Participation provides the opportunity to apply knowledge and experience toward prioritizing projects, reducing duplication of effort, and maximizing productivity and effectiveness.

Also, due to the minimal funding that is allocated towards Lake Ozette recovery in comparison to other ESA-listed ESUs, we also use this project to pursue a number of additional funding opportunities from other grant sources in support of all salmon recovery efforts.

Description and scope of the Recovery Plan implemented
This project funds planning and coordination efforts associated with implementing the Lake Ozette sockeye recovery plan. Through involvement in lead entity groups, Makah tribal staff will provide input on projects and strategies to ensure consistency with the recovery plan. Furthermore, Makah tribal involvement within other Lake Ozette sockeye recovery processes and forums will enable recovery polices, regulations, and actions enacted in association with implementing the recovery plan to consider the tribal perspective. The recovery plan calls for voluntary actions to stop the downward trend of the species and return it to a healthy, naturally self-sustaining condition. Such actions require planning and coordination.
