Description    


Objective: Assess monthly presence and range extent of SONCC using eDNA sampling in reservation streams, complemented by snorkel surveys to quantify abundance and life-stage.
Project Description: This project supplements an existing project to expand the number and scope of samples. We plan to use eDNA and concurrent snorkel surveys collect presence, range, life-stage and abundance data for SONCC and other salmonid species. To better target restoration efforts for Coho salmon, and to assess success of recent restoration efforts, we seek to answer three questions: 1) when and how are Coho using Reservation streams? 2) Where are Coho distributed within reservation streams, in relation to restoration sites? 3) Do known barriers to anadromy effectively obstruct Coho? To respond to these questions, we will survey for Coho Salmon on six tributaries to the Trinity River on the Reservation: Campbell, Hostler, Mill, Soctish, Supply, and Tish Tang creeks. Sampling will be two-pronged, with environmental DNA (eDNA) collections to assess presence and range extent, coupled with snorkel surveys to assess abundance and life stage. Collections of eDNA will occur monthly; snorkel surveys will take place concurrently in all months where flows allow.

Project Benefit    


Project Benefit: SONCC in the lower Trinity River are identified in the Recovery Plan as being at high risk of extinction. Prioritization and assessment of success for restoration efforts in tributary habitats is therefore of great importance for the recovery of both natal and non-natal SONCC. Endangered species are difficult to detect in the field using traditional sampling measures. So, eDNA sampling is appealing as a means to define presence and range for SONCC. These data, combined with life-stage and abundance data from snorkel surveys will help determine restoration effectiveness in Mill and Supply creeks and will test the following hypotheses: 1) Coho salmon primarily use tributary streams as thermal refugia, 2) upstream migration is blocked by diversions in Campbell and Hostler creeks. The answers to these questions will allow for the prioritization of restoration efforts on reservation creeks, which provide year-round flows of cool water into the Trinity River.
