Description    


This project improved fish passage to 1.8 miles of stream and reduced fine sediment delivery in the Catching Slough Sub-basin by replacing two culverts with properly sized fish friendly culverts. At worksite 20110195 a culvert was replaced with a culvert to improve passage to 1.63 miles; at worksite 20110196 a culvert was replaced with a culvert to improve passage to 0.17 miles. A third culvert (Tributary D culvert) that was proposed to be replaced by this project was instead funded by BLM and Coos County and is not reported for this completed OWEB grant.

Project Benefit    


This project will provide access to historic spawning and rearing habitat. Intrinsic potentail for Catching Creek indicate that 1357 coho and 905 steelhead smolts could be produced above crossings and as many as 135 coho and 90 steelhead could return as adults. Intrinsic potential for Wilson Creek Trib D indicate that 630 coho and 502 steelhead smolts could be produced above crossings and as many as 63 coho and 50 steelhead could return as adults. It is more difficult to estimate the increased production below these three crossings. However reduced find sediment inputs to streams will certainly improve water quality and physical habitat conditions to the benefit of coho. Chinook salmn, winter steelhead and cutthroat trout, and beload transport from Trib D should improve coho spawning habitats.
